The Queens Award for Voluntary Service to the community was awarded
to the Kidderminster and Worcestershire Prostate Cancer Support Group at
the Town Hall in Kidderminster on Monday evening September 4th, 2017.
The award was presented to our chairman Paul Brothwell by the Vice Lord –
Lieutenant of Worcestershire, the Hon. Lady Morrison.
In her speech Lady Morrison acclaimed the group for the work they have
done in supporting men and their families affected by Prostate Cancer, in
particular she mentioned the work of our Buddies who offer direct support to
newly diagnosed men with PC, and the facilitation, for many years, of PSA
testing at the Town Hall for the Men of Worcestershire.
Concluding Lady Morrison said that the award was incredibly difficult to win,
but won deservedly so by our group, she said the award was an equivalent
to gaining an individual MBE.
Adel Makar, our President and Consultant Urologist for Worcestershire
Accute Hospitals, paid tribute to the work that the group have done. He said
that treatment for Prostate Cancer in Worcestershire had improved
dramatically over the past ten years and that the National Prostate Cancer
Audit showed the rating of satisfaction amongst men having had treatment
for PC in Worcestershire was one of the highest in the UK.
Mr Makar again commended the Support Group and said that he and his
team had been empowered and inspired through the work of the group to
bring about the centre of excellence that we now have in Worcestershire for
the treatment of Prostate Cancer.
